Adverb

Adverb is a used which is used to show the quality/speciality of a verb, adjective and another adverb.

  1. She spoke softly - Here the adverb 'slowly' is showing the quality of verb 'spoke'. This sentence shows the quality of 'how she spoke'.
  2. He is very good - Here the adverb 'very' is showing the quality of adjective 'good'.
  3. She is walking very slowly - Here the adverb 'very' is showing the quality of another adverb 'slowly'.

 

Kinds of Adverb

 

  1. Adverb of Manner: Adverbs of manner describe how something happens. For example, it is possible to walk or run at different speeds. The words used to describe walking or running at different speeds (quickly or slowly for example) are excellent examples of adverbs of manner. e.g: The boys ran quickly, This example describes how boy runs(slowly or quickly). Some adverb of manner are - Slowly, Honestly, Lately, Freelysoundly, delightfully etc.

  2. Adverb of Time: Adverbs of time tells us when things happen, eg: He came late, here this example describes when he arrives. Some of the adverb of time are - early, late, soon, today, tomorrow, ago, after etc.

  3. Adverb of Place: Adverbs of Place tells us where things happen, eg: She ran towards me, here this examples describes where she ran. Some adverb of place are - in, out, here, there, up, down, below, above etc.

  4. Adverb of frequency/Number: Adverbs that tells us how often or how frequently (again and again) something happens are known as adverbs of frequency, eg: She often comes to meet me, here this examples shows the frequency of meeting. Some adverb of frequency are - sometime, never, seldom, often, rarely etc.

  5. Adverb of Degree: An adverb of degree shows how much a thing happen. This adverb tells us how much more or less a work has done, eg: The work is almost complete. This example tells us how much work has been completed. Some adverbs of degree are - Almost, Fully, Hardly, very, much, more, too, little, almost etc.

  6. Adverb of Reason: Adverbs of Reason shows why an event happened., eg: I cannot read because I am not educated. This example tells us the reason why I cannot read. Some adverb of reason are - therefore, so, hence, because etc.

  7. Adverb of Negation and affirmation: This adverb tells us the confirmation and rejectance of something, eg: I surely help you(affermation - confirmation to help), She did not reply to my letter(negation - rejectance of letter). Some adverbs of affirmation and negation are - Truley, surely, no, never etc.

  8. Relative Adverb: Relative adverbs used to join the two sentences, eg: He was born in the year whenI left Delhi. In this sentence when join the sentences 'He was born in the year' and 'when I left delhi'. Some Relative adverbs are - When, where, why, how.
